NEW ZEALAND GOLD KIWIS

We are all about the best tasting fruit here at Earl’s – rest assured we pick favorites with every new delivery. Right now, the New Zealand Sungold Kiwis are taking center stage. They are extremely juicy, sweet, and refreshing, with a unique tropical flavor to match their striking color. They do not have the fuzzy skin of their green counterpart, and we love the eat them skin and all!

Kiwis are one of the most nutrient-dense fruits around: just one Sungold Kiwi provides 100% of your daily Vitamin C needs, along with plenty of other vitamins and minerals.

Sungold Kiwis Save the Industry

Kiwifruit originated in China and were brought to New Zealand in 1904. After taking to the climate, the fruit was renamed after the kiwi bird and eventually became the iconic national fruit of New Zealand. Zespri, the cooperative kiwi company created by New Zealand growers, developed the gold kiwi in the 1990s through their plant breeding program. When a bacterial disease called PSA decimated the New Zealand kiwi crop in 2010, gold kiwi exports plummeted (from 30 million trays exported in 2010 to only 11 million by 2014).

Zespri’s newest Gold Kiwi cultivar proved resistant and helped save the industry! This variety was later named the Sungold, the same variety on your pallets today.

California Kiwi growers start to harvest in the fall, and the storage crop can last all the way into late spring. The New Zealand Gold Kiwi crop often arrives just in time to fill that gap, with New Zealand Green Kiwis expected in June. Available in both 8/1# clamshell and 12# volume fill through the summer. Try them today!
