BUYER’S NOTES

Updated April 7, 2024

FRUIT

fruit mARKET update

Spring rains put a damper on Berries coming out of all California growing regions. Watsonville even had a hail storm halting harvesting on strawberries. Strawberries will return on the front side of the week but will remain a bit limited until weather improves. Rain can bring seasonal quality issues such as bruising. Betterful Blueberry pints will return Thursday but we will have plenty of Homegrown pints on the front side of the week to mix and match with California 6oz clamshells. Blueberries will start coming out of the central San Joaquin Valley mid-April bringing promotional opportunities. Blueberries are abundant in anthocyanins (plant compounds that give blueberries their beautiful blue color) and are a good source of vitamin C, which means they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to support muscle recovery from exercising.

Covilli Supports Family Farmers with Fair Trade Organic Lime Program

Excerpt from OPN Newsletter

Covilli’s Fair Trade Organic Lime program started in 2015, Covilli’s lime growers are located in two states in Mexico—Veracruz and Yucatán—and both are family-owned operations that were farming organically long before partnering with Covilli.

Owner Alex Madrigal noted that this year’s organic crop has been affected by a changing climate. “We saw blooms early, yet delayed sizing. Luckily, since we do source from two distinct locations, that tends to smooth the production curve, making for a more consistent supply for our customer base. Veracruz this year has seen a particularly cooler winter and therefore tighter production overall.”  He noted “the last couple of months have seen generally elevated pricing due to a cooler-than-average winter in several key production areas. But that trend is now changing as we see more production coming on line.”

“There is strong focus on dark green limes—everyone always looks for the greenest lime they can find,” he said. “We always like to remind our retailers and customers alike that the juiciest, ready-to-enjoy limes are typically a bit yellow and have some give to the touch.”

Apples

Pazazz Club Apples are almost finished. Cuyama California Apples have outstanding flavor: Don’t miss their Sweeties, Lady Apples and Crab Crimson Gold.

Avocados

Mexico is wrapping up their avocado season and Equal Exchange Small Farmer Coop fruit is at the end. California Hass Avocados are starting out of San Diego with larger sizes. Due to weather, growers are leaving fruit on the trees to size up. As soon as the rain lets up and they can get back in the fields we will see all sizes.

Bananas

Earl’s is a banana house carrying Fair Trade Organic Bananas year-round. Did you know the banana plant is an herb and not a tree?

Berries

Spring rains put a damper on Berries coming out of all California growing regions. Strawberries will return on the front side of the week  but will remain a bit limited until weather improves. Rain can bring seasonal quality issues such as bruising. Betterful Blueberry pints will return next week but we will have plenty of Homegrown pints to mix and match with California 6oz clamshells.

Citrus

Weather keeps coming and going with rain. It is late in the season and the fruit has high sugars but is highly susceptible to quality issues such as clear rot and has short legs across the category. Tangos and Murcotts are the last of the Mandarin varieties. We may see some Kumquats from Fruit World in a small way. Lemons 140ct continue to be scarce. Marsalisi Meyer Lemons are steady.

Covilli’s Fair Trade Organic Lime program started in 2015, Covilli’s lime growers are located in two states in Mexico—Veracruz and Yucatán—and both are family-owned operations that were farming organically long before partnering with Covilli. When it comes to merchandising and marketing advice, Alex Madrigal said education around lime ripeness is key. “There is strong focus on dark green limes—everyone always looks for the greenest lime they can find,” he said. “We always like to remind our retailers and customers alike that the juiciest, ready-to-enjoy limes are typically a bit yellow and have some give to the touch.”

grapes

Gapping until Coachella starts up in May.

kiwi

California supply is starting to wind down. We will have a small gap before New Zealand starts up with Golds in May, followed by green fruit in June.

melons

Mini Seedless Watermelons are back in low volume for the next week or so. Divine Flavor will start up in a few weeks with their melon program.

pears

Last of the domestic pears D’Anjou and Bosc. Heavily into the Import Pears with the delicious dessert pears. Abate Fetel sweetness is balanced by a complex floral palate. They should be eaten when they are barely soft to the touch. They are excellent baked in tarts and cakes. Alexander Lucas Pears have crisp white flesh with an incredible aromatic fragrance. When ripe they have a beautiful buttery texture that melts in your mouth. They are best eaten out of hand. Durondeau Pears are a bit tart with a crisp bite and a floral flavor. They are fantastic for cooking and eating out of hand.

Alexander Lucas Pear

veg mARKET update

Springtime is here and Mexico is winding down on Warm Veg, while California is slow to start due to cold weather and rain. Covilli will most likely be done on their winter program in Mexico by the end of April.

Tight Supplies Mark Western Veg Transition

Excerpt from OPN Newsletter

The transition of organic vegetable production from desert regions in the Southwest to Coastal California is well under way, resulting in a demand-exceeds-supply situation for many commodities. The switching of production areas is being accompanied by strong prices with the expectation that it will be at least several weeks before supplies of most commodities reach equilibrium with demand. Braga Fresh Family Farms (Josie’s Organic) transition from the desert growing region up to the Salinas Valley is in full swing. They have already commenced harvest on numerous crops up north including Organic Cauliflower, Organic Broccoli, Organic Leaf Lettuce, and Organic Romaine Hearts. “At this time, we do not see any major gaps in production, although quality issues toward the tail end of the desert and slow starts in Salinas have created strong demand-exceeds markets on the organic romaine, organic leaf, and now organic celery,” said Braga Fresh.

Organicgirl Arugula has completed the transition back up north and is back in stock!

The last of the Mexican Ginger is scarce as we wait for Peru to start up. Fresh Crop Peruvian Ginger will be uncured with thin skin and is expected to arrive by air in 2-3 weeks. A limited offering on Hawaiian Ginger helps to cover the gap at a high price.

The Onion situation continues to be a challenge. Yellow Onions are winding down and Peri & Sons is almost out. Look for supply to run out in a couple of weeks. We may see a gap on Yellow, Red and White Onions before Mexico starts up bringing some relief.

Anna’s Organics (Chowchilla) winter program of Roots, Radishes and Cabbage is finished. Soon they will start up their spring program with Sugar Snap Peas and Green Cabbage. In May they will have Red Cabbage, Baby Bok Choy, Watermelon Radish and Daikon.

Asparagus

Mexican Asparagus is done, and we are fully into California Coastal View Produce Asparagus grown in Gonzales in the Salinas Valley. Warmer weather will bring on increased production.

Artichokes

Cold weather has slowed down production but we will see some Green as well as Purple Artichokes from local grower JAS (Hollister).

summer squash

Yellow Straightneck in good supply.

sweet potatoes

The super tasty Charleston Sweet Purple Sweet Potato is a close cousin to the orange-colored yam. It has an elongated shape and striking shade of dark purple. The variety not only holds color during the cooking process, it turns an even darker shade of purple! The Charleston Purple has a drier, denser texture and more balanced sweetness than orange-fleshed sweet potatoes.

tomatoes

Covilli Romas and Mixed Heirlooms are light, and prices are increasing. Volume will increase in the coming weeks and go through June when Tutti Frutti (Buellton) historically starts up with Heirloom Tomatoes.
