GRAVENSTEIN APPLES, A LOCAL FAVORITE

Gravenstein Apples are a local favorite out of Sebastopol grown by Johnny Appleseed from Solana Gold on trees that are 120 years old. It is one of the first California apples to be harvested and hints of fall around the corner. There are few organic Gravenstein apple growers left so don’t miss this employee favorite!

Russian settlers brought the Gravenstein to California in the mid-19th century. The Gravenstein is loved for its sweet tart flavor and berry fragrance. It makes a gorgeous cider and an excellent pie.

Don’t miss the annual Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol August 10th-11th, celebrating 51 years!

Did you know that the Gravenstein is on the Slow Food USA Ark of Taste? “At the turn of the 21st century, the Gravenstein was disappearing. Grapes, which also grow well in Coastal California, have become far more profitable than apples and other tree fruit. Volunteers at Slow Food Russian River stood up to defend the Gravenstein because they are iconic here and such a visible part of our identity and our cultural history.”
